Chapter 10

That one word galvanized us straight into action.

I leaped to my feet and grabbed my rifle. Shannon followed my lead, and in a matter of seconds we were armed and ready for anything.

“Well, now I feel underdressed,” Letty quipped.

Shit.

Shannon and I were the only ones of our crew with guns.

“Stay close by,” I warned. “Where’s Ally?”

Ally was on her feet at the fireside standing with Rojas and Dia.

Rojas had snatched the pistol from his hip and checked to make sure there was a round chambered and ready.

“Drew, Shannon,” he ordered. “You two come with me.”

“Yessir,” Shannon responded.

I nodded. “Sir.”

“Ally, Letty, Dia,” Rojas commanded. “You don’t have any guns. Stay here.”

I half-expected some protest from the three women, especially from Letty and Dia, but the general’s authoritative tone didn’t leave any room for argument.

It was easy to see how he would have been a formidable commander back in the day, and he slipped back into the role of soldier as though he’d never retired in the first place.

Rojas ran down the hill to the edge of the camp fence, and Shannon and I followed.

“It’s in the water, sir,” one of the lookouts on the fence called.

Rojas stepped up to the fence and took the binoculars that the lookout handed to him. But even without them, I could see why the alarm had been raised.

There was a dragon in the water, and it was getting closer to the island.

“Shit,” I breathed, and Shannon and I exchanged shocked glances. “Is it swimming?”

“But they can’t swim,” Shannon blurted out. “They drown, we’ve seen them.”

“They don’t have to swim.” Rojas looped the belt of the binoculars around his neck. “Come on.”

“What do you mean?” I panted as I ran after the older man down toward the shore.

A gunshot cracked out from down by the beach, and then another.

“These islands aren’t true islands,” Rojas explained tersely. “They’re connected by a sandbar. It’s shallow enough to be completely covered when the water is high, but when the tide drops, it’s almost a walkway. We hoped that the dragons wouldn’t have figured that out yet.”

“This is the first time it’s happened, then?” I asked.

“Yes,” Rojas responded. “And by God I hope we can make it the last.”

We rushed down onto the shore where several of the islanders were already stationed and firing at the dragon. It was still a way off, and there must have been a mile of water for it to cross, but the fact of seeing a dragon enter the water at all was still an unpleasant sight.

Before, whenever we’d seen a dragon in the water, it had been accompanied by a lot of splashing and shrieking as they tried and failed to swim. This dragon was almost totally submerged in the water, with only its long, triangular orange head showing above the waves.

“It must be big enough to be able to reach the sandbar,” Rojas said grimly. “It’s probably not swimming as much as hopping along the ground.”

The dragon’s movements did seem irregular. Instead of a smooth swimming motion, it bobbed up and down in a jerky dance.
